Discussion Question 2 (Week 3)

Discussion Question 2

Annemarie discovers that her aunt who died, Great-aunt Birte, isn't a real person. She knows her Uncle Henrik and Mama are lying to her. Why would her mother and uncle lie to her? What do you think the funeral really is? Who do you think the people were arriving at the funeral if it wasn't real?
Make sure to answer all THREE questions and use evidence from the book to support your thinking!

Make sure to answer the question with a RAD response and use details from the text to support your thinking. Please check your grammar, spelling, capitalization, and conventions before submitting your response. Type it in your blogging doc first so you can go back and edit your work if necessary.

  1. I think that Annemarie’s mother and uncle lie to her because they didn’t want her to know who was in the coffin so that she was not going to freak out about it or be sad about at that time. Also, Annemarie’s Mom and uncle don’t want her to worry about something that she can not fix. And once it happened you can’t take it back. I think that the funeral was really one of Annemarie’s other family members. Not pretended fake great aunt Birte. That is why they didn’t tell Annemarie so that she would feel sad about the death that happened. I think the people arriving at the funeral were friends of that person who died because otherwise Annemarie would know who the person was because of the other people..

  2. Mama and Uncle Henrik lied to Annemarie because they were trying to protect her. They were doing something dangerous and risky. They are clearly using the funeral as a cover and need everyone to tell the same story, if questioned. The less the girls know, the better off they will be if questioned. This is why Annemarie does not share the fact this is a lie to Ellen. She understands the danger and need for everyone to believe the same thing. At first it is not clear who the guests are, but when Peter shows up with Ellen's parents it becomes clear it is related to the Nazis and the threats to the Jewish people, including Ellen's family.

    1. I also think that they used the casket as a disguise so that they to can move the Jews to a safer place away from the Nazis. And not telling Ellen is safer because if she would know that the funeral was a lie it could be dangerous because if the Nazis questioned her it would very risky for her and her family to be killed by the Nazis if she said the rang thing.

  3. The reason Annemarie's Mom and Uncle Henrik lied was because they wanted to protect Annmarie, Ellen and Kirsti. I think the funeral was a way to get people together without altering the Nazis. Uncle Henrik and Annemarie's parent had been talking in code and I think it related to the soldiers taking Jewish people to a concentration camp. I think the people that were coming to the funeral were some Jewish friends of Uncle Henrik and Mrs. Rosen.

  4. Why I think her mom and uncle lied to her is because, it is a very big secret, and something bad is going on that they don't want Annemarie to know. Because something could be wrong with Ellen's parents, or worse her dad died, because the Nazi soldiers knew he was lyng about Ellen so they decided killed him. What I think the funeral really is, is really a funeral for someone else. So they were nice enough to have it at their house. Who I think the people were at the funeral were at the real funeral, but the mom and uncle told them not to talk about it because of what they told the kids. So they were just standing there being sad.

  5. I think her uncle and her Mama lied to her to see how brave she is because if you don't know every thing you can be braver than knowing everything. I think the funereal really is a together moment for the people at Henrik's house. I think that the people arriving at the funeral were people that might've lived by Henrik, and that wanted a moment of peace.

  7. I think Annemarie's mom and uncle lied to her to protect her. It is easier to be brave when you are not telling a lie. I think the funeral was actually a gathering of people trying to help the Jews. It might have also been a gathering of Jews in a safer place.
