Discussion Question 3 (Week 4)

What was Annemarie's test of bravery when the German soldiers came to Uncle Henrik's house? Use specific examples from the book to support your thinking. We then learn that the funeral was meant to gather those who were trying to escape Denmark and go to Sweden. Peter is helping to do this by getting the families ready for their journey. Annemarie thinks to herself, "It was as if he had moved beyond his own youth and had taken his place in the world of adult." What does she mean by this? How has being part of the Resistance changed Peter?
Make sure to answer ALL THREE questions in your answer!

  1. Annemarie's test of bravery when the German soldiers came to Uncle Henrik's house was that she had to be a part of the funeral group and look like everyone else. When the German soldier said, "Who died?" she said in a firm voice, "My Great-aunt Birte." Annemarie lied to the soldiers to protect everyone at the house. She was very brave to do this. Annemarie thinks to herself, "It was as if he had moved beyond his own youth and had taken his place in the world of adults." This means that he no longer plays games with the girls and he is now risking his life to help the Jews escape. Peter now calls Annemarie's mother by her first name instead of "mama" or "Mrs. Johansen" because he is an adult. Being a part of the Resistance has changed Peter by being more serious and not playful. He is now serious because he is doing serious work to save people. Peter has also become braver by doing his work with the Resistance.

    1. I agree with the part that say that Annemarie lied to the solider that had asked her "who died?" I also agree that Peter changed his youth by calling Annemaria's Mom Inge.

  3. What Annemarie's test of bravery was when the German soldiers came to Uncle Heinrick's house was, Annemarie had to stay calm and act like nothing was wrong and that it was just a funeral for her fake aunt Bettie. But, it is hard because the soldiers are asking questions to mama about the funeral. What Annemaire means by ''It was as if he had moved beyond his own youth and had taken his place in the world of adult." is she thinks Peter does not act like a child anymore, and he has a place in the world, and that he can now do things on his own without somebody. How Peter being part of the Resistance has changed him by learning about all the bad that is going on in Denmark that has caused him to be more brave and take more chances to save the jews.

    2. Claire, I also agree that this was a hard time for a lot of people in Denmark. Peter acted like an adult because he decided to help other people and this was a very serious job. He understood that there was a lot to worry about and he no longer acted like a child with no worries.

  4. Annemarie’s test when the soldiers came into Uncle Henrik’s house was to not tell that they were hiding the Jewish people at the “funeral.” Annemaria means by this that Peter has liked changed his youth into a adult is that he is acting more like an adult than his normal age. Being part of the Resistance has changed Peter because he is acting more like an adult, and he is helping the Jewish people by taking them to Sweden. He is also taking good care of the Jewish people,by finding a place to stay for the Rosens when Annemarie’s family was watching over Ellen.

  5. When the soldiers come to Uncle Herik's house, Annemarie shows bravery by lying to the soldiers about who was in the casket. Annemarie says "My Great-aunt Birte" was in the casket, but really she does not know who or what is in there. She lies to protect her friends and the strangers who have gathered.

Annemarie says about Peter, "It was as if he had moved beyond his own youth and had taken his place in the world of adult." I think she means that he has grown up and does not play silly kid games anymore. That he behaves and is respectful to all people.

I think being a part of the Resistance has changed Peter a lot. He is no longer playful and takes his responsibilities seriously. He knows that the Jews need his help.

  6. Katherine, I totally agree with what you are saying. I like how you added the detail about Peter calling mama by her first name, not mama or Mrs. Johansen. Both Annemarie and Peter are very brave.

  7. Annemarie shows so much bravery when the German soldiers come to Uncle Herik's house. She firmly tells the soldiers that her "Great-aunt Birte" is in the casket, even though she does not know what is in the casket. I believe that Annemarie has learned great bravery from her mother and her uncle.

Annemarie thinks to herself about Peter saying "It was as if he had moved beyond his own youth and had taken his place in the world of adult." I believe Annemarie is noticing that Peter has changed. He no longer plays games with her and Kirstie. Peter also is calling Annemarie's parents by there first names. He is growing up and is realizing the important roll he can play to help the Jews.

Being a part of the Resistance has changed Peter because, he has had to become more serious. He is seeing the unjust things that are happening to the Jews. He knows that if he is brave he can help and make a difference in the lives of the Jews.

  8. Annemarie test of bravery when the german soldiers came was to blend in and try to make it sound like their fake aunt died and they were having a funeral. What Annemarie means how Peter has moved on and is now a adult is he is taking a dangerous mission to save some of the jews he also calls the Rosen's by their last name. Being part of the Resistance has changed peter because he now know that getting the jews away from the german solders is something that he can do to try and make a difference for those jews.
